Optimist Tuning Guide

Use this guide for your basic settings then adjust them as you get more experienced to allow for your sailing style, the sail you use  and your  height and body weight.

Mast Rake

Basic Setting 282-284 cms or 11-112 inches measured without kicker from top of mast to top of rear gunwale

Sometimes radials might be a little more upright light to medium wind and a little further back medium to strong wind

Mast Ties

Top and bottom eased to 6-7mm middle 2-3 mm off touching mast or if lazy all ties about 5mm off mast

All ties 4-5 mm off mast personal choice

All ties 3- 4 mm off mast or heavier sailors top and bottom ties just off mast

middle ties 5-6 mm off mast

Mast Sail ties twice round mast use 1.5 -2mm pre stretched cord.

Top Mast, diagonal, tack and clew ties 3 mm cord around mast and boom 2-3 times.

Boom Ties

4-5 mm at the ends and up to 7-8 mm in the middle but make sure ties don’t stretch

Outhaul

Slightly tighter than eased

Eased

Firm but not tight as you still need drive in the sail

All sails have a different foot lengths so you need to adjust your sail accordingly, mark your settings on your boom.

Luff

Slack to keep draft back to allow pointing

Slack to medium as wind increases to pull draft forward. If choppy firmer to give more power but less pointing

Tighter to pull draft forward and open leach

All sails are designed slightly differently some like a generally ‘softer’ luff tension and some like a generally ‘firmer’ tension. Check your sail tuning guide. Set luff tension using ‘twists’ boom and pin stop on mast.  The diagonal tie setting is really, really important and make sure you replace it if it starts to fray.

Sprit

Creases at throat

Throat creases just disappear, lightweights need creases to depower the sail

Tight or light weights might ease to show crease at throat

In light to medium winds as you get more experienced learn to ease your sprit downwind and put it on again after you have rounded the leeward mark.

Mainsheet and Boom Span

2:1 or 3:1

Maybe use lightweight 6mm sheet

3:1 purchase

7-8 mm non absorbent

mainsheet sheet

3:1 purchase

7- 8 mm non absorbent mainsheet

Generally the boom span wants to be tight, set the depth to about 80mm.

Use a strop of upto 225mm or 11 inches between the bottom and top mainsheet blocks to reduce the amount of mainsheet you use and reduce windage. Bigger sailors can move the mainsheet position on the boom strop forward to nearly above the thwart to give more room to tack with out sinking the back of the boat
