JOINING INSTRUCTIONS:- RYA PERSONAL WATERCRAFT INSTRUCTOR

Course dates: - Tuesday 28th June - Thursday 30th June 2011

Course joining information:

The aim of this course is to provide you with the skills necessary to teach the RYA Personal watercraft certificate of competence.

Course Timings: Day 1:- 9:30am- 6pm; Days 2:- 9am - 6:30pm & Day 3: - 9am-4:30pm

ASSESSMENT

During your PWC instructor's course, you will be assessed on the following skills:-

Theory

Weather, tides, navigation, safety, background of sport, knowledge of the RYA PWC course syllabus.

Practical

Personal skills on both PWC (and powerboat if applicable), safety awareness, group control and management.

Teaching

Communication, briefing, debriefing, 'soft' skills, preparation and presentations

 

Pre-course planning:

It is important that you prepare for the course as fully as possible; to help you, please work through the following tasks:

 

1)      Assess your own knowledge in the following areas:

·         Tides & tidal streams

·         Weather

·         IRPCS (International Regulations for the Prevention of Collisions at Sea)

·         Knots

·         Charts, buoyage & basic navigation

 

As yourself the questions:

"If I were asked about any of the above, would I be able to answer confidently and accurately?"

If the answer is no, or you are not sure, please do some revision prior to the course.

**Remember that your students may ask questions far advanced of the RYA PWC syllabus !

 

2)      Prepare one ten minute talk on the subject next to your name:

·         Buoyage- Jeff Pittman

·         Measuring distance on a chart - Jamie Thompson 

·         Measuring bearings on a chart - Cub Llewelyn-Davis

·         Tides & tidal streams - Jack Matthews

·         Weather - Interpreting an inshore forecast -

·         Collision regulations, byelaws & courtesy to others -

 

The aim of the talk is to assess your ability to deliver a ten minute talk to a group in a classroom environment. Remember, talks should follow the guidelines below:

- The talk must have an introduction, a middle and a summary

- The talk should last 10 minutes

- The talk must be technically accurate

- The group must be able to hear you, see any visual aids and be as involved as possible.

- The talk must be interesting and relevant 

- You should check for understanding from your students during or at the end of your talk.

You will have the following equipment available for your use during the presentation:-

Whiteboard & markers

Charts, dividers, Portland plotter

Tide tables/ Tidal stream atlas/ Almanac

 

3)      Read and understand the RYA Introduction to PWC handbook (G35)

Pre-course checklist:

Please make sure that you have the following when you arrive at Beach Rock Leisure for your course:

a)      First Aid certificate, as approved by the RYA

b)      RYA PWC certificate of competence (& RYA Powerboat level 2 cert if you have one)

c)   RYA membership number or certificate fee (which is slightly more than a years membership!) - you cannot receive your instructor certificate without this...

d)      Prepared and practiced 10 minute talk

e)      This information pack, the course program (click here to download) and a pen and paper. 

f)      Personal clothing & protective equipment (i.e. wetsuit/drysuit, buoyancy aid - CE kite mark minimum 50N, gloves, footwear, waterproofs etc) - please note that the centre cannot take responsibility for any loss or damage.

g)       Your PWC with all relevant safety equipment as advised by the RYA - please see the RYA Introduction to PWC handbook for this information, including a floating 6 metre towline. Please make sure your PWC is adequately insured. 

h)   Take a few minutes to complete the following questionnaire, click here record your results and bring them along to the course with you. 

 

Other useful items: Spare warm clothing and a warm hat might be useful, sunglasses, sun cream, sun hat etc.
